Range:
They are from the Palearctic and breed from England and Spain in the west to Japan and North Africa. In Europe, they are only found in the Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Hungary and Greece. Almost all birds migrate to the tropics in winter.

Shallow muddy wetlands, lakes, rivers, floodplains, salt marshes, swamps, brackish, freshwater reservoirs, marine habitats, tidal creeks, coastal areas, estuaries and saltwater lakes
